I dismissed my discomfiture as stress from a move from a cozy apartment to a roomy house in the suburbs. I heard things. I woke up a lot. I could sit in my living room and one minute feel toasty with the winter sunshine streaming in and the next chills. The phone rang and no one would be on the line. No call showed on caller ID.

Nightmares, audio, not visual, were what woke me. My heart would already be racing, I was not jolted awake. I often heard a rumbly growl behind my right ear. I moved into another bedroom, then another on a different floor. It seemed to take a day or two, but it would start again. I tried NyQuil, which worked once, proved ineffective afterward.

The phone's message light would blink, but there would be no call, no message. Things disappeared. Reappeared. Nothing terribly important, but I worried if that would be next. Things would move as if there were a breeze or a touch.

I began working later and going out more often. I avoided my home. I dreaded my home at night. I bought nightlights and installed them in every room. I left the TV on, the radio on. I had unexplained bruising, red welts.

I heard the growl in the daytime, I saw something on the stairs dematerialize. With the daylight no longer a haven, I started asking for advice and help. I was referred to Harusami.

If I were unsure about someone helping whose spiritual beliefs did not parallel my own, I was woken by three beings who were not of this world. I could hardly speak, but I asked over and over What do you want? Then as fear washed over me, I began reciting the Lord's Prayer and they disintegrated.

When I called Harusami, she must have sensed my desperation because she arranged to come that evening. I was ready to stay at a hotel rather than go home so the expense of an emergency call was nil. My new home with its eleven rooms, 3 floors, plus a basement and a garage never gave me the comfort of home that my apartment across from a hospital replete with sirens and helicopters had. Of course, these happenings may have been why I had found such a bargain in Greenwood Village, a wealthy suburb of Denver.

Harusami came with her kit of herbs, teas, incense. While we heated water for tea, I walked her through every room and told her about the occurrences in each. She videotaped my dissertation. Explaining the rituals, she involved me in each step. WE addressed the problem together. We were not there as warriors, fighting and defeating a foe; it was no exorcism. It was, however, a release offered with love and acceptance.

Believe or laugh, it wouldn't bother me either way! All I know is that I can run up and down my stairs, walk into a dark room, go to bed, not only without dread, but with genuine peace. Some things ARE priceless.
