Reiki
is an ancient healing technique utilizing Universal Energy (also known
as Ki or Chi).
Legend has it that in the late 1800's a Japanese professor, Mikao
Usui, went on a quest to find the healing modalities used by Jesus
and Buddha. Truth and legend get a little hazy at this point and I
would suggest reading and learning as much as you can from the many
different sources and find your own truths. A good source of information
on the subject can be found at the International
Center for Reiki Training. Also check out the Bookstore
for some of my favorite Reiki books.
A Reiki treatment lasts from 30 minutes to an hour and consists of
the Reiki practitioner laying hands on or over specific energy gateways
(chakras) on the fully clothed client while he/she relaxes in a laying
or sitting position. People have described the sessions as deeply
relaxing and soothing, or vibrantly energizing, the experience is
unique for everyone, and varies from treatment to treatment.
A
Reiki practitioner is attuned by a Reiki master who generally instructs
the student in chi energy, the chakra system, the hand positions and
the history and practice of Reiki, then the student's channels are
open and the ancient symbols placed in their aura in the ritual of
attunement. There are generally three levels of attunement, Level
I, Level II and Level III, a Reiki Master is one who has been attuned
to Level III and has had the experience of teaching Reiki and passing
attunements to another student.
Reiki
assists in healing on an emotional, physical and spiritual level.
It can boost the body's own immune systems, eliminate physical pains,
release stress and anxiety and help in the healing of common colds
and headaches. There are stories of Reiki being used to cure cancer
and other life threatening illness and it's also been know to be very
effective in the treatment of chronic conditions such a fibromylgia,
migraine headaches and gastrointestinal distress. Reiki can also be
used to heal animals, plants, and inanimate objects... believe it
or not, I've heard some practitioners use it to start their car batteries
on cold winter mornings!
My
most affirming experience with Reiki energy happened not long after
my first attunement. I had a miniature rose plant struggling to survive
in my sunny kitchen window. It was a shabby little thing that produced
buds that would fall off before blooming. Well, I had used the Reiki
energy on my friends and myself with wonderful results although my
dog was still apprehensive, but I wondered if perhaps this was a just
a form of hypnosis in effect (I am always the "Skeptical Believer")
so I began using Reiki on this poor decimated plant whenever I stood
at the window to wash my hands.
It
responded. About two months later it was lush and green and filled
with new buds, then a few weeks later it came into glorious bloom,
a riot of pink blossoms! The "Reiki Rose" as I now came
to call it, was stunning, and I was pretty darn sure I hadn't hypnotized
it into bloom.
Reiki
attunements are also known to open up ones psychic channels allowing
one a better flow of information, for me it's a feeling of being a
conduit for Spirit and better enables me to connect with others to
assist in their healing. Reiki has touched every aspect of my life
in a positive way, bringing me to the healing path and most importantly
giving me one more tool for self-healing and connection to Spirit.
It has also encouraged me to learn about other healing modalities
and I hope to share this information with all of you. I'm not, by
any means an expert, only a fellow traveler enjoying this journey,
and would like to share with you my experience in the hope that it
can assist even one of you on your path to healing, health, joy, love
and light. It's my intention to feature the writings and knowledge
of other, more expert practioners and teachers of these healing arts
in the coming months.
