April 2006 Spring Cleaning
The tulip buds are peeking out from under the dead, dry reminders of autumn, the mornings are filled once again with the songs of birds and the tap, tap, tap, of the resident flicker telegraphing his message of availability and longing. It's spring here in North America, a time of rebirth, wonder and expectation after the long harsh winter. Time for spring cleaning. I've been taking spring cleaning to a whole new level since reading up on the ancient art of feng shui. Meaning "wind and water" feng shui teaches that the proper placement of furniture and symbolic items in one's home or office can regulate the flow of "chi" or life energy in the environment rewarding one with peace, prosperity, love, happiness, longevity ... whatever one wishes to increase or experience. As I've slowly implemented various feng shui "cures" in my own home, I've seen some amazing results. It only makes sense that one's outer environment would correspond to ones inner peace or chaos respectively; clearing the clutter from your closets has an incredible power to clear your inner cobwebs. Letting go of that which no longer serves you, opens up the space to receive what you truly need. I'm sure everyone is holding on to a few material "things" out of guilt, apathy or obligation...that "unusual" teapot from your sister, the scrawny, half-dead Boston fern in the kitchen window, the Pepto-Bismol hued blouse your friend gave you that you just haven’t had the courage to wear, your late mother's jewelry box that stirs up more sadness than joy. Now is a great time to give your “stuff” an emotional evaluation and see whether it serves you, or if you are serving IT. Let go of the “emotional clutter” and fill your space with things that bring you joy. Donate, sell or give away the items that no longer serve you, knowing that the energy of giving, of releasing, is a beautiful flow and return. That “ugly” lamp will bring light and joy to another, those books will better serve the world by being read than gathering dust on your shelf.
Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, work to move the “chi” or life energy in your rooms. Open up the windows, let in light and air. Bring in fresh flowers or a few branches of blossoming forsythia or lilac. Water is a great “chi mover,” table top fountains, or a fish bowl with living plants and fish can do wonders in creating a soothing environment (see my pal “Maynard the Betta” in the photo). As you’ve moved out what no longer serves you, reflect upon what you wish to bring into your life. Set your intention by affirmation, ritual or visualization with gratitude and joy that this “new energy” is already present in your life. Speaking of “new energy” … ah hem … now for a word from our sponsor, yup Soul2Soul Treasures has many new products perfect for a feng shui home. Natural salt lamps have become quite popular, as nature’s ionizers they clear and energize the air while emitting a soothing, warm glow. Feng Shui experts advise the use of wind chimes to fill the air with pleasant sound and to enhance the universal life force, or "chi” in stagnant areas. You can now find Himalayan Salt Lamps in Natural or Feng Shui Globe styles along with some beautiful Chakra Wind Chimes in Soul2Soul Treasures this month. Please stop by and have a listen!
