There have been so many devastating and tragic events that have unfolded around the world this year. The heartbreaking tsunami that crushed Indonesia, hurricanes Katrina and Rita that pounded the Southern coast of America, the devastating earthquake in India/Pakistan, the random bombings and senseless killings across the globe. The fact is, there is an enormous population of people in pain and suffering right now on this Earth, people who have survived after watching loved ones and neighbors perish, people who have lost all their worldly possessions, and people who have risen to greatness in the pain and chaos.
Perhaps the media was focused on those few people who resorted to the basest of survival instincts, the looters and thugs. But what I also saw was the humanity, compassion and courage in a lot of people. People who within a split-second, became heroes. Neighbors who tread through the murky waters to save neighbor, rescuers who disobeyed orders and went on to save people, a veteranian who refused to leave his hospital full of animals until he could be sure they would be cared for. I saw the heart of the world open up in compassion during these sad times. I saw the heroism of the very poor giving all they could.
People often ask why would the Divine Source/God allow these tragedies to happen? All I can say is without darkness there is no light. This is all part of the human experience on Earth. Our souls are experiencing, growing, evolving, and what greater "schoolyard" than a disaster? Being faced with such tragedy and darkness, so many souls were shown their true light, they became the heroes of their story, or in the story of another. And yes, others became the villains of the story, for without a "villain" whether it be a "hurricane" or a murderous looter, there really is no story.
Once again I was reminded of the story of the lotus, it's gleaming white head rising above the filth it grows upon. A pure spiritual light, I have seen many lotuses this year. So, as we grieve, may we also rejoice in the love, compassion, strength and courage that is floating to the surface.
